Top Tips for Invisalign

Just like braces, Invisalign enhances your smile and is an effective treatment for teens and adults. You’ll enjoy the convenience of Invisalign and get the results you want by maintaining your aligners and staying on track. Whether you’re debating to receive Invisalign treatment, or you’ve already started your Invisalign journey, here are some of our top tips to keep in mind when wearing your aligners.

Only drink water when you’re wearing your Invisalign aligners

As the aligners are a transparent plastic, it would not look pleasant if they became foggy or discoloured. Avoid drinking liquids such as coffee, tea, red wine and any other drinks that have the possibility of staining your aligner as they will do just that. Even worse, if you enjoy a sugary drink it will seep between your aligners to your teeth, this can cause acid erosion and tooth decay. The only thing you should drink while wearing your aligners is water as this has no staining properties. If you do want to enjoy another beverage besides water, it’s best to take them out, however, we recommend sticking to water so there are no disruptions to the straightening process.

Put your Invisalign aligners in their case

When removing your Invisalign aligners, make sure to place them in their given case so you don’t misplace them while you’re eating. As they are clear, they can be easier to lose than you think, even if you place them somewhere you won’t forget. This can lead to accidental breakage as they are fragile once taken away from the mouth. It’s highly recommended that when you’re not wearing them to place them in the case to protect them.

Don’t clean your Invisalign aligners with toothpaste

You’d think that as you can clean your teeth with toothpaste you should be able to clean your Invisalign aligners with it too, however, this isn’t the case. Toothpaste can contain abrasive ingredients that can cause the Invisalign aligners to go cloudy and discoloured. Instead, you can use denture cleanser, retainer cleanser or leave them in cold water to slightly cleanse them. Also, even though hot water makes for a better clean, this isn’t true for Invisalign aligners, you shouldn’t use hot water to clean your aligners as it can cause them to heat up and lose their shape.
