Are Dental Implants Painful?

Our oral health and wellbeing is so important, and has a positive impact on our appearance, confidence and the functionality of our mouth, teeth and gums. That’s why our team of expert dentists, here in London’s famous Clerkenwell district, love dental implant treatment – and why we will often recommend it to patients with one or more missing teeth.

Do dental implants hurt?

To answer this question, it’s important to note that dental implants are a type of oral surgery. However, it’s not considered as invasive as other types. You’ll be under an anaesthetic when your implants are placed for maximum comfort, and any pain afterwards is usually managed through over-the-counter medications, like paracetamol.

What happens in the process?

A small incision is made in the gum, before the tooth implant is gently screwed into place. It then adheres to the jaw bone during a healing period of several weeks to months. Finally, the crown is fitted in place, allowing you to bite, smile and chew once again.

Will my tooth implant need replacing?

No, it shouldn’t, but this does depend on how well you care for it – including having a good oral routine and attending regular check-ups with your dentist. Signs it may need replacing could include bleeding, the implant wobbling in the socket, or pain.

Why should I consider tooth implants?

Not only will your new tooth look and function as a natural tooth, but it could prevent future loss of the gum tissue and jaw bone – which can happen in the case of missing teeth. It’s also possible that tooth implants could benefit your bite and chew function, as gaps in your smile cause the teeth to migrate.

Can I replace more than one tooth?

Of course:

Our expert dentists can discuss which type is right for your smile.

Can tooth implants make me look younger?

Yes. Gaps in the smile can be incredibly ageing, and can also create a sunken or hollow appearance in the face. False teeth, such as dental implants, can give structure to the face and create a more uniform smile.
