Signs Of Poor Dental Hygiene

As expert dentists situated in Clerkenwell, London, we work hard to create happy, healthy smiles for all our patients – whether they live in London, work here, or simply like to visit. In this post, we’ll talk in more detail about oral health, including how to recognise signs of poor dental hygiene, and what you can do to correct it for that gorgeous, confident, glowing smile.

  • Bad breath

We all get bad breath now and then – some of us seem especially susceptible to it in the mornings – but if it’s a constant problem, it could be a sign of something that needs attention in the mouth. Mention it to your dentist at your next appointment, and we’ll advise you on your next steps.

  • Bleeding, swollen gums

Our gums should look shiny, healthy, pink and clean. If they’re red, inflamed, or bleeding, it could be an indication of gum disease (gingivitis or periodontitis). In the early stages, this might be treatable by your dentist but leave it any longer and you could suffer serious problems – like gum or bone recession.

  • Tooth decay

It sounds obvious, but tooth decay is one of the leading signs of poor dental hygiene. It might be a mild pain or sensitivity to something hot, cold or sweet; or, you might notice staining or darkening on your teeth. If you do end up with holes (cavities) in your teeth, you may need a filling; if the inside tooth pulp is affected, your dentist may recommend a root canal. Of course, in the most severe cases, an extraction may be all that’s possible – but we always try to save the tooth if we can.

While this list isn’t exhaustive, it gives you a good overview of some common signs of poor dental hygiene. But, because good oral health does depend on brushing, flossing and getting those regular check-ups into your calendar if you’re not doing these things, you might already see problems developing with your mouth, teeth and gums.

Here in Clerkenwell, our dentists help treat patients of all ages, backgrounds and dispositions (even the most nervous!) and will never judge you for the appearance of your teeth. If you’d like tips and techniques on how to improve your oral health – and would like our expert dentists to take a closer look at your smile – then do get in touch with us today, for a discreet consultation at our friendly Clerkenwell practice.
