How To Care For Your New Dental Implants

If you’ve recently had new dental implants fitted, it’s important to know how to care for them – both now and in the long-term. At Zero:Seven dental practice, our small but knowledgeable team has a combined experience that runs in the decades – and we’re dedicated to giving you the tools and information you need to maintain your oral health.

In this post, we’ll give some suggestions for immediate aftercare for your tooth implants, plus share our know-how for future-proofing your implants, with ways to prolong their strength and condition for years to come.

Immediate aftercare: straight after your surgery

When brushing, take care around the site of your tooth implants, and try not to touch or fiddle with them. You may find eating difficult to start with, so it’s a good idea to stick to soft foods. Once you’re fully healed, you’ll be able to enjoy the same diet you had with your natural teeth.

General aftercare: in the weeks following your surgery

We recommend rinsing your mouth with either an antiseptic mouthwash or warm salt water several times a day. The best time to do this is after eating, as it can help flush food debris out of your mouth, but it can be done as often as you like. If you smoke or regularly drink coffee and red wine, try to cut down or avoid these, as they can stain your new tooth implants. Smoking can also delay healing.

Future aftercare: maintaining your dental implants

Now the bone and gum round the tooth implants has healed, you’ll need to ensure they’re properly cared for. This will involve:

  • Brushing and flossing twice daily
  • Regular dental check-ups
  • Checking for problems, e.g. loose implants, sore gums and signs of infection

It’s a good idea to book in for a check-up after healing too, as this will help ensure everything feels comfortable and is infection-free.
